Hauoli La Hanau e Charles Reed Bishop!
Board of Education member, banker, philanthropist, and businessman, Charles Reed Bishop was born January 25th, 1822.
Charles Reed Bishop’s life has always been entwined with that of his beloved wife, H.R.H. Princess Pauahi. Kamehameha Schools and Punahou School would not be what they are today without his contributions. He is also associated with what we now call First Hawaiian Bank, the bank he started.
What many don’t know is that he consciously became a Hawaiian Kingdom citizen in 1849, long before he met his future royal wife. He spent the rest of his life devoted to serving his country. He was not just a representative in the legislature, he also spent time on the Privy Counsel and years as a member of the Board of Education. Under H.M. King Lunalilo’s reign he also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Our country and citizens deserve a calendar that celebrates our Nation and its diverse beauty. In 2019, we will be sharing many more significant dates that we hope will be representative of who we are as a Nation. If we miss something please forgive us as this is a work in progress!
