#ManaoMonday: The King’s Band and Its First Bandmaster
What we now know as The Royal Hawaiian band, began in 1836. Many different names like King’s Musicians (1855), Royal Hawaiian Military Band (1873), etc. were given to the group which has only grown in size and popularity.
Not much is now known about the first bandmaster, except that he was called Oliver and was of African descent. Oliver’s tenure was during King Kamehameha III Kauikeaouli’s reign. Many enslaved people fled the United States for Hawaii, he may have well done the same. Our second bandmaster, George Washington Hyatt, himself fled slavery. Bandmaster Hyatt lived appreciated and free the rest of his days in our country.
